Atuatanga at ImagiNATIVE Film Festival 2025

Atuatanga VR had a fantastic debut on a world stage at the ImagiNATIVE Film Festival in Canada earlier this year. The largest Indigenous film festival in the world, ImagiNATIVE offered a mixture of XR creations that included, 360 degree VR, Digi and analogue games, AR creations, Dome Storytelling and more. The festival showcased how Indigenous creatives were embracing cutting edge technology to tell their unique stories. With Te Reo Māori and English subtitles, it was fantastic to see how Atuatanga easily bridged the cultural / language divide with players from all over the world. The interest in the language, the culture and the kaupapa of the game were quite mind-blowing. We had all sorts of professionals from the gaming industry commenting on the quality of the game and how it combined Indigenous story with gaming technology. Having such positive feedback from the festival was a real testament to how kaupapa Māori gaming can be successful on a world stage. Now is the time to build on our successes and open up further doors for Māori wanting to break into an industry that is only going to grow into the future. A VR Podcast created by Dr VR will be released shortly - watch this space.
